An investigation into a suspicious package at the Social Security Administration office in Middletown caused the evacuation of the office and the nearby Meijer store and gas station this afternoon.

After the package was found to be a box of medical records, the office remained closed and the store and gas station reopened, according to a Middletown city official.

Mike Grimes, head of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office bomb unit, said the “suspicious package” was X-rayed and it was a box of medical records.

Crews were called on a report of the package earlier today at the office located on Towne Boulevard. The office is in an outlot of the Meijer, so as the investigation was happening, people were asked to leave the Meijer.

A bomb investigation unit was on the scene, officials said. People were let back into the Meijer by about 1:15 p.m. today, and caution tape was being removed from the area.
